Today we want to dedicate these lines to share our impression of the Duplicity tool, after reading some of the main features offered to the community. To start with this brief review, let's first define what duplicity is, then we will share our opinion on the program.
What is duplicity?
Duplicity is a software developed to perform bandwidth-efficient encrypted backups using the rsync algorithm. It backs up directories by producing encrypted volumes in tar format and uploading them to a local or remote file server.
Because duplicity uses librsync, the incremental files use less space and only record the parts of the files that have changed since your last backup. Moreover, because duplicity uses GnuPG, it uses it to encrypt or sign, so these files will be completely free from eavesdropping or modification by the server.
In addition the duplicity package has the rdiffdir utility, which is an extension of rdiff librsync for directories; this extension can be used to produce directory signatures and deltas as well as normal files, these signatures and deltas are in GNU tar format.
What is our opinion about duplicity?
From a technical point of view, we can say that duplicity is quite mature software, however the perfect software has not yet been invented, so it is possible that we can still find some bugs in its operation, but it is one of the best tools we have today to copy backup data and to top it off, it is also very easy to use, since Duplicity implements a traditional backup scheme, where the initial file contains all the information (full backup) and in the future only the modified information is added.
This tool has been used to perform large backups at corporate level, as well as has been used by users on a personal level, therefore, we can say that it is not an experimental software, much less an obsolete software, since its last update was released on December 2, 2022, and is constantly working on new improvements for the tool.
